Racking inspection by drone – no lifting platform, only the aisle is closed briefly

Racking inspection by drone with the Flyability ELIOS 3 supports the inspection under DIN EN 15635: the drone captures even high, hard-to-reach beam levels without an aerial work platform. Each aisle is closed only briefly; the rest of the warehouse keeps running.

  • Nobody has to go up on a lifting platform
  • Short closure per aisle
  • Every finding located in the point cloud

Inspecting racking in high-bay warehouses takes a lot of effort: aerial work platforms, aisles closed for long periods and work at height. With our method, the drone captures the racking: the racking inspector reviews the upper levels on screen instead of from an aerial work platform and carries out targeted checks on the racking where our report marks anomalies. Limitation: occupied bays conceal uprights and beams; the drone is most useful on the upper levels.

Occupational safety: nobody has to work at height

Nobody has to go up on an aerial work platform or work at height.

All agreed racking levels instead of spot checks

Complete footage of the agreed areas and accurate location of findings.

Lower costs: no lifting platform, short closure

No lifting platform, no scaffolding, short closure per aisle.

One report with located findings for the inspector

We fly – Inspectomatic, the reporting arm of our group of companies, analyses: located findings with photos, videos and a 3D point cloud, as an inspection report in the browser. More background in the high-bay warehouse project example on inspectomatic.de (in German). The 3D point cloud with all located findings is produced by Inspectomatic – more on this at inspectomatic.de/punktwolken (in German).

Flyability ELIOS 3 inspection drone

Detect bent uprights and loose connections in your high-bay warehouse – with a short closure

High-bay warehouses need regular and thorough inspections.

Damage to racking components such as bent uprights, cracks or loose connections has to be detected early so that the competent inspector can assess it during the inspection under DIN EN 15635. Conventional inspection methods are often time-consuming, expensive and risky for this.

  • With the Flyability ELIOS 3 we capture high-resolution images and LiDAR data of your racking system – without ladders, aerial work platforms or scaffolding.

  • The assessment remains with the competent racking inspector. The inspector reviews the upper levels on screen instead of from an aerial work platform and carries out targeted checks on the racking where our report marks anomalies. Each aisle is closed only for the flight; the rest of the warehouse keeps running.

  • The ELIOS 3 keeps personnel away from working at height. Photos, the point cloud and located anomalies provide a sound basis for targeted maintenance and the long-term planning of your storage facility.

  • Drone footage and the racking inspector complement each other: greater safety, shorter closures and less effort for your high-bay warehouse.

Short closure: just one aisle

Only the aisle being flown is closed briefly.

Occupational safety: nobody has to go up on a platform

Nobody has to go up on an aerial work platform or work at height.

Every finding easy to locate again

The ELIOS 3 generates a point cloud showing the flight path and the position of any damage.

We plan racking inspections by drone to suit your warehouse and use the Flyability ELIOS 3 – including in hard-to-reach storage areas.

A racking inspection with the Flyability ELIOS 3 drone means that even hard-to-reach areas of the warehouse can be inspected accurately without an aerial work platform. Using the drone removes the need for elaborate scaffolding or rope access, and only the aisle currently being flown is closed.

Frequently asked questions

How does a drone inspection differ from conventional racking inspections?

Conventional racking inspections at height require aerial work platforms, and aisles remain closed for longer. With drone inspection no aerial work platform is needed: the Flyability ELIOS 3 flies along the aisle, and only the aisle currently being flown is closed. The live image shows what the camera sees during the flight; you receive the photos, videos and point cloud in the inspection report.

Which racking systems can be inspected with the Flyability ELIOS 3?

The Flyability ELIOS 3 is suitable for many racking systems, especially tall racking in high-bay warehouses that can hardly be reached without an aerial work platform. We clarify with you in advance whether and how an aisle can be flown. In addition to racking, we also fly hall ceilings and roof structures – learn more under inspection of ceilings and roofs in industrial halls.

How safe is inspection with the Flyability ELIOS 3 drone?

The Flyability ELIOS 3 is built for flights in confined and hard-to-reach environments and is surrounded by a protective cage. The pilot controls the drone from the hall floor, and nobody is in the closed aisle during the flight.

How long does a racking inspection by drone take?

The duration depends on the height of the racking, the length of the aisles and how full the racking is; empty racking is recorded in considerably less time. We agree the procedure and the order of the aisles with you in advance, so that only one aisle is closed at a time.

Who prepares the expert reports and test reports after the drone inspection?

We fly, and Inspectomatic, the reporting arm of our group of companies, produces the inspection report with photos, videos, a 3D point cloud and located anomalies. The assessment and the test report under DIN EN 15635 are prepared by the competent racking inspector – your own or one you appoint. They receive the inspection report in the browser, with nothing to install, together with the original material.

Is the ELIOS 3 easy to operate, and is special training required?

Inspection flights in confined spaces require experience – that is why our own pilots fly on our deployments. We do not offer pilot training. If you have your own ELIOS 3, we will be happy to advise you on how to use it.

What happens if defects or damage are found during the inspection?

We record anomalies on the racking system with image and position in the inspection report. We show you obvious defects directly on site; the assessment is carried out by the racking inspector. The drone provides the visual inspection of the entire installation; measurements on the racking are taken by the inspector specifically at the marked points.

Can the drone inspection be carried out while the warehouse is operating?

Partly: each aisle is closed briefly for the flight, while the rest of the warehouse continues to operate. The interruption is therefore limited to the aisle currently being flown and stays short.

How can I book a drone inspection for my racking?

You can request a drone inspection directly from Kopterflug. Write to us via the contact form; we clarify the details of your racking system, arrange a date and agree the next steps.

What is Kopterflug's role in the racking inspection?
We fly the racking with the Flyability ELIOS 3; the inspection report with photos, videos, a 3D point cloud and located anomalies is produced by Inspectomatic, the reporting arm of our group of companies. The competent racking inspector carries out the inspection and assessment under DIN EN 15635 on this basis. More on the inspection of industrial plants by drone.
What experience does Kopterflug have in inspecting industrial plants?
Kopterflug has been inspecting industrial plants by drone since 2017 – including boilers, tanks, silos, chimneys, halls and racking. We know how things work in industry and power stations and use the Flyability ELIOS 3 for internal flights.
How does Kopterflug support working with racking inspectors?
After the drone inspection, Inspectomatic, the reporting arm of our group of companies, prepares all data and images so that competent racking inspectors can use them directly for their test report. They receive the inspection report in the browser, with nothing to install, together with the original material.
What do you receive after the flight?
You receive an inspection report with high-resolution photos, videos, a 3D point cloud and located anomalies. The data is prepared so that your racking inspector can use it directly for their assessment.
Does the drone footage support the inspection under DIN EN 15635?
Yes. Our footage supports the inspection under DIN EN 15635 and DGUV 208-061 by the competent inspector. We agree the scope of the flight with you and the inspector in advance; the inspector is responsible for the assessment and the test report.
